POSSIBLY the largest yarding of cattle yet offered at the FarrnWorks Manjimup cattle sales since the re-opening of these yards was presented to a large gallery of buyers last week, when 470 head were presented. Values were strong, long with competition on the quality lines, while there was also a few good buys for the bargain hunters.
An excellent run of beef steers got the sale moving, with these selling to $8 18 and 188ckg. Attracting strong processor interest were the better conditioned beef heifers with these reaching $808 and 166ckg. Cows and bulls were sought after, making tops of $793 and $1354 respectively.
Some ordinary cows and calves were sold with these lightweight animals with baby calves at foot reaching $390. The top steer price was paid for two Murray Grey grainfed steers from Downderry, Narrogin, with the 435kg steers making the top of 188c/kg and taking the double in the top gross also of $818, when bought by regular buyer Western Meat Packers (WMP).
Three Angus steers, also grainfed, were sold by WD & IM Phillips, Manjimup, with the 458kg prime steers selling to WMP for 169ckg and $774. Selling 98 steers due to leasing the property, DD Brumby, Ferguson, saw the mainly black cattle attract strong competition, to reach a high of $734. These sold consistently from 170ckg to 175ckg, with the main buyer being Westside Cattle Co, taking six pens, while FarrnWorks Perth and Charcoal Springs, Manjimup, secured one each.
Later this vendor sold a line of 18 Grey steers for 180ckg with the 259kg steers costing $466. A single Bos Indicus steer with a set of trophy horns trucked to the sale from Bindoon, returned vendors PN & WE Walker $756 when WMP bid to 120c/kg for the 630kg Steer.
Friesian steers were not favour, resulting in one pen of the four offered selling for 111c/kg to see the 368kg cattle go to Blythwood, Pinjarra for $408. Five Simmental heifers weighing 490kg from GL Dickson, Nannup sold to WMP at 165c/kg to top this section at $808, while three Angus offered by Lightfoot Brothers were not far behind when the 615kg heifers made $787, selling to WMP for 128c/kg.
Another seven Dickson heifers made $744, when the 496kg heifers made 150c/kg. Another pen of heifers to go to WMP were sold by J & DL Borgoias, with a single red Angus making $778, and six blacks going for $633. Five from the Phillips family were added to the truck, with these weighing 453kg selling for 138c/kg and $625.
The best of a good offering of processor cows went to a single Angus from LE & EF Brookes, Yornup, when the 645kg female sold to WMP at 123c/kg and $793. F Pesotto & Son sold several Simmental cows, seeing the top two of 630kg go to Harvey Beef at 122c/kg to return $769. Downderry, Narrogin, sold five cast for age Limousin stud cows with these weighing 612kg, also going to Harvey Beef at 127c/kg and $777.
Six cows from GL Dickson made $741, selling at 128c/kg, while Joe Bendotti sold five for $765, again, purchased by WMP. Other higher selling pens included nine from Jarnadup, for $746 and DM & G Kamman selling three up to $676.
Four single cow and calf units were sold, all from A & E Pratico, with all going to local buyer, S & S Stoiche. The small framed, lightly conditioned bos Indicus units attracted little interest, with prices ranging from $280 to $390. Processor competition was strong on the slaughter bulls, resulting in some excellent values achieved.
The top of $1354 went to a bull from F Pesotto & Son that pushed the scales to 1050kg, selling for 129c/kg to Harvey Beef. This buyer also paid $1066 for an Angus from Gandy Timbers, bidding to 130c/kg. The top in cents a kg went to a 733kg Angus from Gandy Timbers, when WMP bid to 136c/kg and $997.
